Japanese has konnichiwa (こんにちは) for “hello” and kanpai (乾杯) for a toast. Otsukaresama (お疲れ様) works differently: coworkers use it as a greeting or sign-off, and it is often heard around after-work drinks, before or alongside kanpai.

The phrase combines o (お), tsukare (疲れ, “tiredness” or “fatigue”), and sama (様), a respectful form of address. Together, they respectfully acknowledge someone’s effort and the fatigue that comes with it. Depending on the moment, otsukaresama can convey “good work,” “thanks for your hard work,” or a warm acknowledgment that the day’s work is done.

It is a warm, thoughtful phrase—but it can feel a little formal or heavy. Its lighter, slangy shorthand is otsu (おつ), often written with the single kanji 乙.
